Fall arrived early to Shenandoah National Park. The leaves and grasses were already turning from their bright colors to brown. The sun was setting and casting a very warm orange glow which amplified the already browning growth.

This tree was still standing, despite that it had very little foliage on it left. What caught my eye was the colors looking up, which greatly distracted from the tree. The green leaves and yellow leaves against the deep blue sky. I prefer the photo in black and white because there is so much color.

this bright yellow and green colored leaf was backlight which helped accentuate the veins on the leaves. In black and white, it almost looks like a white textured leaf, bt is a link.

Every now and again there is a moment that cannot be recreated in photography. This was one of those moments. A cool spring day, a late afternoon walk, and a moment where the light, trees, weather all collided together into something unique and special. The light that filtered through the millions of cherry blossom petals was soft and delicate. The flower petals seemed as if they were the source of light. Looking up was like looking into a blizzard that illuminated the sky with a soft pink glow.

Pink and Red Crown of Thorns. Besides the delicate beauty of the flower, you can see the thorns. The name Crown of Thorns comes from the belief that these thorns were used as the crown that Jesus wore for his execution. In any case, the flowers certainly do not know anything about the trials of man, they just continue in their own silent beauty. Latin Name: Euphorbia Milii.

This is an orchid that had just opened in the botanical gardens of the Caves Branch Jungle Lodge. This is a unique flower in that it has a tub of nectar in the bottom of its cup, which is also the only exit after the unsuspecting ants drop in to get a taste.

On the second day of the trip I took a trail close to the campsite that climbs up the side of Mount Healy. Along the trail are many small bushes. I was surprised ad the number and variety of berries that can be found in the park. A fascinating fact is that all of the berries in the park are edible. These Rose Hips from the Prickly Rose are very high in Vitamin C.
